At Real Care Support, we understand that a focus on the underlying functions of behaviour is essential to providing world-class quality residential child care that supports children through early life trauma so they are able to thrive and grow. To offer this, we start with clinical leadership & supervision working alongside CCATS (Coastal Child and Adult Therapeutic Services), which is lead on the ground by our assistant psychologists who are in the home 5 days a week, embedding the therapeutic and psychological support to the young people who live in the homes as well as supporting and developing the staff team.
Real Care Support Ltd (RCS) recognises that due to complex trauma, children in care present with a range of needs often expressed behaviourally, which communicate a deeper need for safety, healing and recovery. RCS also understands that the children’s behaviour are dynamic and are influenced by factors such as their level of emotional regulation or environment, and uses a three-layered approach to meet these needs.
Trauma Recovery Model
The Trauma Recovery Model utilised at Rose Terrace is part of the organisational framework, to be used as part of the homes systems to support trauma-informed care.
The concepts identified by TRM can be applied to individuals in the home and research has shown its use can be effective with youths with a range of developmental and cognitive functioning levels, and who have a wide range of complex behaviours.
The assistant psychologist will work with staff as well as young people/children so it will be a team approach to support progress.
Good Lives Model
Alongside the TRM, Rose Cottage uses the Good Lives Model (GLM) to regularly review each area as applicable to the individual child.
This assists in providing a focus and enables appropriate support and target setting. It also acts as a tool to monitor from a holistic view any changes in an area. Targeted intervention can then be considered to mitigate any difficulties that may arise when a specific area has decreased.
The young people are actively encouraged to be involved in this aspect, enabling autonomy and understanding in any targets set. It is noted that this process is used to complement the TRM, as such, targets will be at a level deemed appropriate for each individual child.
Team Teach
Team Teach approach is a behavioural framework, with an emphasis on safety for all, with the need for staff to understand what is potentially causing the behaviours of concern and what environmental changes, non-verbal and verbal strategies should be used first where possible before any restrictive physical interventions are applied.
